Thoughts on this piece…
This end-table stemmed from a friend’s challenge to build a small table that would resemble a “duck pond.” I had a piece of extremely spalted and curly maple burl slab that I thought would be perfect for this occasion.
To give the impression of the mystical, dark waters, I tinted the epoxy and used gold pigment, ensuring that the live edge, representing the pond edge, was still visible. The hugely contrasting grain of the maple, from whites to blacks, really helped set the scene and the jaggered edge of the pond boasted some puddles and an island surrounded by water, all in a 18”x18” canvas.
The black powder-coated legs added a modern touch to the piece, without taking away too much from the pond itself.
This piece triggered interest by a customer making a dining table and coffee table with a similar design.
